Judy (2026)
This is Judy (2026). She is made with charcoal and acrylic paint on a canvas, measuring 60 x 73 cm. She is named after singer and songwriter Judee Sill, who I did not know until my love said my sketch for this painting looked like her.
On her arm is a section of the lyrics for her song The Kiss, which has become a favorite. Her lyrics so poetic and ethereal, it’s like she knows something about the hidden magic and secrets of the universe, and when I listen to her voice as she sings I am convinced that she did.
Judy is cradling a globe representing earth. But instead of painting the continents and oceans as we usually see them, I painted land in the shape of a sleeping crocodile baby. The crocodile is an ancient symbol, said to embody primal power and survival. In modern interpretation, it represents patience, resilience, and the ability to navigate the depths of the unconscious. Around her wrist is a gold chain carrying a compass without a needle, representing either being lost or not needing to know the direction.
This painting is about how humans have a unique ability to take care of practically all other species on this planet in a way that I don’t think any other species can. Just think about it for a moment:
You and I can nurse and raise almost any baby animal if they loose their primary biological caregiver.
We have access to the knowledge, the technology, and the resources to help all other species not only survive, but to thrive. And yet, despite all of our abilities to do so, we aren’t even doing that for our own species, because we are moving at full speed towards our own destruction through human-made ecological collapse.
Why?
