Patriarchy in Pantsuits (print)
I kept seeing women looking exactly the same. A beige trench-coat without a belt, A-shaped. Their hair pulled up in a bun. Chunky, elaborate sneakers. Some “unique” handbag showing personality. Trying to look like no effort had been made. And I just kept thinking of Hilary Clinton and her pantsuits for some reason.
The women in this painting are all stretched into thin strings of nothing, their only reason for being is to wear the shoes and hold the handbags.
“Patriarchy in Pantsuits” is about a form of faux-feminism that I really hate. Because it’s not “brave” to wear high heels in a boardroom of wealthy share-holders. I know women who have blocked share-holders from entering the boardroom, politicians from entering parliament, women who have stood up to big-oil, weapons manufacturers, women who been chased and beaten to the ground, women who have been locked up by police for their unwillingness to comply with genocide and ecocide.
So please stop saying it's “brave” to embrace wrinkles and signs of aging without injecting our faces with all kinds of shit to make us look more fuckable. Do you have any idea how condescending that sounds? I am not "brave" for not dying away my grey hair. I am just a human, aging. Our courage deserve better than to hijacked and reduced to be about how we dress and how we look.
The bar is set so low when it comes to feminine representation of women’s full range of personality and qualities. I will not have my woman-ness reduced through patriarchal and consumer-capitalistic definitions of it.
I will not contend with women simply claiming the place of our oppressors, “celebrating” some hollow victory and new found ability to oppress our previous oppressor, perpetuating the damn system instead of breaking it.
I want to tear the whole thing down
